Piccolo Espresso Mod. 49 - Szigony Müszaki Válallat, Budapest (Hungary)

Please help me find this coffee machine!
Kérem, segítsen nekem találni ezt a kávéfőzőt!

Giordano Robbiati's first patent: a handle - 29th May 1945

For me, this patent was another important clue which helped me chase the idea i had of Giordano Robbiati, and the Brevetti Robbiati in general.

About 3 years ago, I thought the Brevetti Robbiati business was a coffee machine manufacturing business... that its destiny only depended on how good or bad the sales of the coffee makers would be.

In fact, Brevetti Robbiati was a "foundry of light metal" (See my previous post here).

Giordano Robbiati was manufacturing all sorts of objects in his foundry taking order from other businesses and manufacturing x pieces of door handles, meat grinder or fruit juicer etc. on demand.

Of course, Giordano Robbiati was also manufacturing the coffee machines he patented... And after he built a resellers net, he would also take orders from his resellers and produce the machines requested. (see letter of the Bon Trading company here).

So to conclude, the coffee machines produced were only one part of Brevetti Robbiati's business.

How important was the gross income generated by the coffee makers?
Could Brevetti Robbiati have survived without the coffee makers?
Or in contrary, were the coffee machines just another product in the business' portfolio?

*****

Mussolini's Italy surrendered to the allies on the 8th of September 1943 (fantastic audio here) following a serious bombing of Milan among other cities in Spring 1943 (destroying Mr. Robbiati's business among other businesses).

Mussolini did try to escape the allied forced but was caught and finally executed on the 29th of April 1945.

I added this last phrase because someone was in the area at that time: Thomas CARA!

(Thanks Everyone at the Bancroft Library!)

Thomas Cara was then Captain in the Counter Intelligence Corps and did analyze the content of Benito Mussolini's Briefcase after he was captured. (see previous post here)

Sorry i do get carried away by these fantastic stories, here is Giordano Robbiati's first patent that he deposit on the 29th of Mai 1945... a handle :

Szigony in English...

I can't remember if i told you already that the magyar word "Szigony", the name of Imre Simon's business in Budapest, means "Harpoon" in english.

In fact, the design was used in the name as these backsides of printed cards testify:

"Nec Tar" replacement seals

Details of the drawing... fantastic use of the white paint to correct or enhance lines and shines!

Notice the lead pencil draft lines near the handle & spout of the Jug:

Here an original drawing which served as draft for the adverts:

Stella Wien - Model 306E - Desider Stern, Vienna (Austria) - Part 2

The model 306E, during its very limited commercial life, was sold by the trademarked name "Piccolo", as this back of leaflet testifies:

The name "Piccolo" was also used to sell the Model 305E (picture here or here).

Both remaining model don't make mention of the "Piccolo" trademark.

Both still show with pride the Stella plaque, although on the machine of Dr. Ursula Becker, it looks slightly different.

Stella Wien - Model 306E - Desider Stern, Vienna (Austria)

The Model 306E was only manufactured from 1950 until 1951.

On this picture taken at a fair, you'll see 2 models at once:

(Did you notice the 2 different Jugs, left a more trapezoidal, right a rounder one)

It works on exactly the same way as the Model 305E i presented earlier and uses the same patent registered by Desider Stern (here or here).

850 days... a failure?

I am ashamed of myself!!!

How could it take me so long to see the beauty in the 306E?

850 days since i saw this machine for the first time (26th of January 2010) ...

... I failed.

I failed...
... but today ...

I REJOICE!!!

I have covered every coffee machine model that went out of Mr. Stern's Stella business...
... all but one: the 306E.

I misinterpreted a few sparks between the 306E and me...
... failed to imagine what could become of us...
... realizing now - at last - i missed foreseeing:
i only looked at what was in from of me, instead of picturing a healthy model...
... that was a love story that died in the egg ...

Is it too late?
Can i save or reinvent a love story that never took place?

On the 25th of May 2011, i was privileged to see this at Judith's place:

A duck without legs... talking about legs... one was laying just aside among other replacement parts:

Thanks to Lucio Del Piccolo who showed me the right path.
(What would i do without you?)

And...  how i can put it right?
How can i thank you enough Dr. Ursula Becker for your patience and your tenacity?
How can i thank you enough for the time you took for me, and your photography skills?

Yesterday, 850 days later:

Tuesday, 22 May 2012

It's simply D-I-V-I-N-E!

Today, i took a flathead sold by Imre Simon in Budapest.

I measured the height:

20.3

I measured the diameter of the base:

12.54

Then, i divided 20.3 by 12.54...

... looked at the result:
1,61881978

I realized it was φ (The golden number)...

... and went to bed ...

...what a day¡
